185: What to Pack in Your Pageant Winner’s Go Bag

Today we're talking about your pageant winner “go bag.” You've probably heard of a go bag before, but maybe not in pageant context.

A go bag is something that you have quick and handy, so when you've got to go really fast, you can grab the bag and it has the essentials right there.

You can probably start to imagine what this might be like for a pageant winner. Immediately after winning a pageant, you are often swept up into the very next; thing whether that is a media appearance, or a press conference, or maybe it's just to the gala or a coronation ball.

Oftentimes you’re swept into the very next thing and you might find that it is difficult to dig for all the essentials that you might need. And oftentimes somebody else is backstage packing up all of the things that you had to compete with. You might not even know where your essentials are.

Just like if you were going to pack a bag in your home, which I recommend for everybody. Just a side note here, EVERYONE should have a go bag in their home. This way if your house catches on fire, all you have to do is grab this bag and run out the door. For that, you might have a flashlight or my brother suggested that we have an AM radio. Things like cash and sneakers and things that you would need on the go.

This is essentially the same thing. In this episode I'm going to cover a few of the things that I would recommend you pack for pageantry.

If you want the full list, you can download it for free at:

winapageant.com/packinglist

That is a checklist of all of the things that you need to pack for your pageant.

What would be the things you would want to stick in your go bag?

Imagine yourself: you just won your pageant and you're getting swept off to do a press conference immediately after. Here are a few things you would need

  1. BOBBY PINS (or whatever it is that you clip crowns onto your head with)

Whether it’s bobby pins, miniature claw clips, or the snap on clips, you’re going to want something in here. They never give you enough backstage so you always want to make sure you have plenty on hand. With my thick hair I always needed like 20 extra bobby pins. So you never know.

  1. TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE

Now the reason for things like this (and also for the next thing I'm going to tell you), is that when you're competing in a pageant it goes by SO quickly. If you're eating snacks backstage you're going to want to have a toothbrush handy. That way, immediately afterward when you're talking with people, you're not bringing up the stinky breath and the same is true with stinky underarms.

  1. BODY WIPE AND DEODORANT

Now every pageant girl has stinky underarms, not because we're stinky in our real life, but because you don't want to wear a ton of deodorant when you're changing in and out of outfits. So you don't want to show up stinky to a press conference.

There are great body wipes called “Good Wipes In My Bag Swag”. After you've won, you walk backstage you get your wipe out of your go bag and you wipe all the areas that need addressed.

Then you're going to apply some deodorant. Because now it's time to start using deodorant again, you don't have to use it during the pageant, (in fact, I recommend that you don’t so you don't get it all over your wardrobe), but you're going to need it afterward.

  1. EXTRA BRA STICKIES

When you're sweating on stage, it is very common to sweat them off. So if you are using these for whatever outfit you are getting crowned in, bring an extra pair (just in case they start sliding around).

  1. PERSONAL ITEMS

You might consider things like chapstick and lipstick, particularly something that matches the color that you're wearing. You might need aspirin - the lights are so strong that oftentimes you can get a headache just from being on stage. You might need personal items like tampons or pads.

  1. PEN AND THANK YOU NOTE (or a list of people you don’t want to forget to thank)

As soon as you win a pageant, you forget everything. I don’t want you to forget your manners. So before the pageant, you're going to make a long list of the people that you know are important to thank. Some of those people would be your coach, pageant directors, choreographers and volunteers, sponsors, the whole production team. Any of the people who supported you along the way, including, and especially, your family. Those are the people that are with you through thick and thin, whether you win or lose, you're going to want to thank these people.. write them down on a piece of paper that goes in your winners go bag.

Other things I would consider putting in your go bag is your wallet with your ID and cash, and perhaps some travel perfume.

These are just some of the things you might include. Again, if you want the whole list, go to winapageant.com/packinglist.

Now once you have your go bag packed, before you go on for the crowning, you're going to want to put the bag backstage with a post-it note that says “I need this bag immediately after the pageant, thank you” with your signed name and contestant number or title.

This way if a volunteer is backstage packing up your things (because you're off to the next thing) the volunteer will see this note. They won't know what's in this bag, but it's clear that you need this bag immediately after the pageant and they will happily bring it to their Queen.

Remember, the whole idea of the winner’s go bag is: grab and go.

And that my dear is going to keep you organized enough to win a pageant.

In this episode, I want to talk about a question you’ll be asked either in an interview setting or in your pageant paperwork, and this is: what is a fun or interesting fact about you. This may seem simple, but it can actually be pretty overwhelming.

Most times you want to use some interesting, weird thing. Like “I can touch my nose with my tongue. Or “I have a double jointed elbow.” Or “I was born with a unicorn horn.” But these things are a bit crazy!

The thing that you want to use as your measurement for whether this is a good fun fact or not is: if this is the only thing that they remember, will it be fun and enjoyable and will they think fondly of me. OR will it be a little bit embarrassing? If the only thing that your judges remember about you is that you can touch your nose with your tongue, or that you have crazy elbows, it’s going to get weird.

Instead, what we want to do is one of two things. First of all, we don't want to make it weird. But we do want to make it fun and interesting. Now let's say we've got fun and interesting,

There are two ways we could take this answer:

Number 1: Answer it quickly.

Have a good time, put on a big smile and move on with the interview. That is the method for if you received a fluffy question, the type of question that you’re like, “why are they asking you this? This doesn't have anything to do with what I really want to talk about." So you could answer the question quickly, make it fun and move on. Or you could answer the question in a way that loops them back to the things that you do want to talk about.

That's a skill that I teach in the win a pageant academy and in the game plan, that's what I teach my clients to do too. That there are no fluffy questions. But sometimes, whether you're asked on your paperwork where you can't loop back very easily (or you don't want to), or if you do want to actually share this fun thing because it’s fun and interesting, here are four ways that you can actually discover something interesting about you:

1: Unique Accomplishment

A unique accomplishment is something that very few people do.

This is not, I can do 10 push ups. Because lots of people can do 10 pushups. That's not really that interesting. That's not really that unique. Instead you want to think about something that would peak people's interest.

Maybe you won the spelling bee when you were in the third grade or maybe you have been in Toastmasters for 27 years, or maybe you have, fostered kittens every summer for the last 12 years. Things like that. That's a unique accomplishment that might not have anything to do with how you could hold the title, but it would be a really interesting fun fact.

And if that's the only thing that they remembered about you, that'd be kind of cool.

2: Done-It-Once Adventures

Now done-it-once adventures is exactly what it is. You've done this thing once. So this could be if you climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, or you walked on a glacier in New Zealand, or you got engaged while skydiving.

Those are the kinds of things that they've happened once. And it was awesome. And if you're remembered by that, it makes you look kind of cool. That's what we're going for.

3: Fun Habits

Fun habits that you like to do a lot. This could also be thought of as things that you love or things that you hate.

For example, this could be that every holiday season I watch the movie the holiday and it puts me in the holiday spirit. It could also be I always buy white cars because I cannot stand having a dirty car. I love owning cars that are white, because you can tell immediately when it's dirty.

You see how those are interesting, fun facts, but they're not weird.

4: Worthless Talent.

A worthless talent is just a fun way of saying this is a thing you probably wouldn't compete with. So this would be like, you can recite the entire declaration of independence, or you can say the ABC’s from Z to A. Or I love clogging, or I know how to swing dance, even though I don't do it often, I know how. You know how to do a snare drum, or you can play Mozart's symphony without looking at the sheet music.

Things like that, that are talents that you wouldn't necessarily be in a competition against, or bring to stage, like dance or singing, but it's still a really cool talent.

Those are four ways that you can find a fun fact about yourself. Remember, once you discover what your fun fact might be, the test you want to put it through is: if this is the only thing the judges remember about me, am I going to be kind of embarrassed that this is the only family, or is that kind of cool.

And that my dear is how you win a pageant!

Today I want to give you two very specific strategies that can help maintain your confidence about competing in a pageant even when you've got naysayers and chase the dream that God has given you.

Strategy Number 1: This strategy is called “Re-framing” you may have heard of this before. It's very common in self-help and self-development to reframe something is to basically look at it in a different way.

What I want you to consider is reframing your pageant competition. Though you're running for a title that will represent your community, or state, or nation, I want you to reframe it as: instead of telling people that you are competing in a pageant, imagine what would change if you told them that you were running for public office. Right? If you told your boss or barista or your second cousin those types of things now instead of them being flooded with their uneducated stereotypes about pageantry, they will instead be flooded with their uneducated stereotypes about the political office.

Here are some similarities between politicians and pageant women:

1: Politicians have campaigns that they run on, and it's very similar to pageant platforms. Often even in politics, it's called a political platform.

2: Politicians support and speak for a group of people. That is exactly what you are doing as a pageant woman, right?

3: Politicians have a local, state, and national level; rules to win; and so do you. The same things are happening in pageantry.

4: Politicians also get voted into positions. So do you!

5:  Politicians must prepare for very difficult conversations to come up at any time and so do you.

6: Politicians do appearances all over the place.

Now strategy #2 is probably even more important, even though it's not always possible and that is to plant yourself in rich soil. Just like a flower will bloom when it's in perfect conditions and it struggles to bloom in poor conditions, the same will be true for you no matter what you are achieving in life. You may have to replant yourself, find good soil, find a place where people will welcome you where they're cheering you on.

Sometimes, I understand you're not able to leave the ‘soil’ you’re in because it’s your husband or your mom that is critical of you competing. Oftentimes those things can happen, and so you can't just replant yourself, but what you can do is add good soil. So, if you're unable to fully get out of the negative environment and replant yourself into a fully positive environment what you can do is at least add good soil.

And that my dear is how you win a pageant.

In this episode, I'm going to walk you through five real reasons that women lose pageants and I'm going to give you some specific guidelines on what you can do about it.

We’re going to start broad and work out way to the more common reasons.   The most common reason women lose their pageant is they simply don’t have ‘the look’, mostly because they haven't discovered what this pageant is looking for as the main spokesperson for their pageant. In order to win, you have to show up with your complete marketing package.

The next somewhat obvious reason that you may be losing your pageant is you are too stiff – like a robot, or ‘pageant patty.’ This often comes off as either not having enough practice or having too much practice. There are lots of ways to fix this problem, but the main one is: practice with real life experience!   The third reason you may be losing your pageant is what I call a ‘failure to thrive.’ This means that you haven’t really done all that much to achieve your goals since the last time you competed. You have to show improvements and growth every year so that you can prove you’ll make the most of your year if given the title.

The fourth area that could be holding you back is you don’t have a solid marketing plan. This is why having a Legacy Project is so important: because it allows you the opportunity to market yourself, your platform, and your pageant.

In the Win A Pageant Academy we teach a simple method of Promise-Proof-Plan that prepares you for all sorts of questions (download the free training here) and ensures you deliver your marketing plan onstage and in your interview.

If you are nailing the look, you have a solid plan but you still aren’t winning, it could be because you are missing a personal/pageant brand. Your ‘brand’ is deeper than your ‘why’ for competing in the pageant – your brand is your why for being on this planet! It’s your purpose and your passion.

In the Academy, we help you identify your personal/pageant brand because from this, everything else can flow!

Your brand is vital to winning! If you have the look, plenty of practice, thriving goals, a solid plan, and you’re still not winning your pageant, then your brand should be where you begin.

The very first thing that I do with all of my clients is help them identify who they are. It's so important for you to know who you are and what you are doing on this planet. When you become crystal clear on that, all those other things will easily fall into place.
